Iceland: New beginnings

First of all, I have to admit that I’ve been pretty horrible keeping my tumblr updated and this is long overdue.

Where do I begin?

My first time on a plane was, surprisingly, not as scary as I believed it would be. Actually, I would describe as something rather dull and tedious. I’m glad I don’t have to fly for many hours at once in the next couple of months.

I cannot even describe what I felt like when I first stepped onto Icelandic ground. My smile was everlasting. I remember standing outside and just laughing to myself because I couldn’t believe that any of what was happening was real.

I settled in nicely to my guesthouse and couldn’t resist the temptation of taking a nap. The time difference, which is five hours ahead, and the traveling drained all the energy out of me.

New years…new years in Reykjavik is unreal, crazy, magical and breathtaking. I have never, not once in my life, seen that many fireworks going off at once. It’s something that I’ll remember for the rest of my life. Also, I won’t forget how shocked I was when I found out the price of a pint later that night. Everyone drinks, everyone is broke. Makes sense now.

Making friends is easy, making Icelandic friends is another story. They’re all friendly when they’re drunk, probably because of the endless 850ISK pints they drink.

Speaking of friends, I managed to meet a group of people who were interested in going on a road trip. Best idea EVER. The golden circle is a fascinating chain of natural wonders. Do you want geysers? You’ll get them. Glaciers? That too. Waterfalls? Why not!

We stayed in tiny rustic cabins by the ocean in Vík. The ocean is both so powerful and calming. Somehow, it’s a very harmonic dichotomy. And the ocean is quite the sight to see the next morning.

Some of my crazy, yet brave, friends went for a swim in a glacial lagoons. Let me tell you, it was a very quick swim for all of them and brenivin was greatly appreciated after that.

I could go on and on about a bunch of things, but I’ll save some for later. Hopefully, it will motivate me to write more often.

Bless bless…for now.

Less than 24 Hours

Countdowns to events, such as an exchange, make you realize how quickly the year passes. This goes to say that I can’t believe that 365 days can quickly turn to 24 hours.

A year passes by with a blink of an eye.

I started planning for this trip a year ago and now a few hours is what keeps me separated from Iceland.

I wouldn’t be blessed with this opportunity if I didn’t get any help from my parents. My father and mother have supported me from the start and have been great beacons. Thank you mom and dad!

My loving boyfriend is another important contributor to the realization of this project. He was always there for me whenever I didn’t think it was possible or wanted to give up. If you’re reading this, four and a half months is not forever. <3

Rachel, the best friend a girl could ever have. I’ve had a specific person as a”best friends” in the past, but she doesn’t mean anything to me as much as this girl does. I’m going to miss her and I cannot wait to see her again.

My Geography crew at Concordia, every single individual is different from another and that’s why I won’t forget you while I’m gone.

Let’s all try to keep in touch as often as we can.

I cannot wait to share my new knowledge and adventure with everyone.

Sincere regards,

S.

ONE WEEK!

GOING AWAY PARTY!

9 DAYS

I’ve reached the single digit numbers.

Two weeks; Student Permit

I finally received my approval for my student permit after tiredlessly waiting. I can’t believe that in two weeks from today I’ll be waiting for my flight to KEF at the Boston Airport around this time.

This is unreal.

And now the dilemma of what to pack arises. Great.
